Dex
I am the manager at Kirkwoods. I have worked in the monumental trade for almost 15 years. Having started as an apprentice in 2005, I can now say I have learnt every aspect of the job, inside and out.
Early on I took a keen interest in the lettering, artwork and design side of the job. My main role now as, well as insuring the smooth running of the business and staff is:
- Letter new and existing memorials.
- To create pieces of unique and personal artwork to be forever engraved onto granite memorials.
I place several orders every year from suppliers around the world to keep our prices very competitive and our stock current up to date.
I am pleased to say I have designed several bespoke memorials for families who wanted something special to them, and its being able to help people with things like this that make my job very rewarding.
Ingrid
I joined the team at Kirkwoods as office manager in 2015. I am usually the first contact you will have with the company either in person, on the telephone or by email.
I will guide you through the process of choosing the best memorial for your requirements. This includes helping with the inscription if needed or making suggestions on how best to word an additional inscription on an existing memorial or refurbishing an old one.
I also carry out all the administration work and make sure I am always up to date with all council and church regulations and fees, so that the permits for your work are passed as smoothly and quickly as possible.
I take great pride in knowing that all our customers needs have been met with a caring and sensitive manner at what is a difficult and emotional time in people’s lives.
Connor
I joined Kirkwoods as an apprentice sculptor in January 2016. I came to the company without any previous experience. However, 4 years later I am now a fully qualified monumental sculptor.
When I started, my main role was to shadow Dex and to learn from him. Dex taught me how to inscribe our granite memorials using modern engraving tools and techniques. I have also learned more traditional skills such as the art of gilding using gold leaf which is something that few Sculptors still use.
Although my role in Kirkwoods has little interaction with our customers, I take great encouragement when receiving feedback from them that my high standard of work is greatly appreciated when producing a fitting memorial for their loved one.

I have been the managing director of Kirkwoods since 2014.
I am very proud to now own a company which has been running for over 110 years.

Additional inscriptions and items
After we inspect your chosen memorial stone we will prepare a quotation for the proposed lettering. We can match all types of lettering from old hand carved to modern computer generated lettering.
Kirkwoods Monumental Sculptors also offer traditional raised lead lettering and lead on marble lettering, which we often use for restorative work. Lettering on marble is matched by our tradesmen and then cut traditionally with hammer and chisel, then leaded or painted depending on the original lettering.
Families often include words from literature, sentimental verses and scripture on the memorials to make that personal connection. We have many sample suggestions for wording in our show room for you to look through.
In addition, we can provide extra items you may wish to display alongside the monument, such as coloured stone chippings or stone flowers.
